Virtual Circle Invitation – Connect via Zoom
Spinning Straw Into Gold: Microaggressions as Teachable Moments
with Shahanna McKinney Baldon and Davey Shlasko
What do you do when you witness someone say or do something that they don’t realize is racist, sexist, ableist, or otherwise offensive? What do you do when someone tells you you did something offensive, and you have no idea what was offensive about it? In this session we’ll explore some common, everyday acts that can – against your best intentions – be incredibly hurtful. We’ll identify how such microaggressions relate to the larger systems of oppression like racism, classism, heterosexism and so on. Most importantly, we’ll practice skills for addressing microaggressions when they come up, without blame or punishment, in order to create opportunities for healing and learning and foster an environment where everyone can feel safe and respected.
